"On a long lonesome highway East of Omaha... you can listen to the engine moanin' out as one lone song..."

Ok, it was Redfield, not Omaha, but Redfield doesn't quite have the same ring. Kris Kunze and I were pulled around Dallas county for about 3 hours by Tony Nichols (our engine) on our training ride this morning starting at 5:30. Great route out to Adel then North of Redfield and back in on Grand thru Booneville hills. I was able to snap a couple of pictures sitting on the back as Tony asks Kris "did you see that lighting?" when my flash went off. (hee, hee) About half way into the ride, it started pouring. What a mess.

"say here I am, on the road again, there I am, up on a stage... here I go, playin' star again, there I go, turn the page..."

55 mile road race (4 laps). 25 mph winds.

About 30 guys in the cat3 race. Pete Basso, Kris Kunze, and myself represented our team today. Several guys from Chicago in our race.

3rd lap in the cross wind section, I get into a break of 8, including Byran Moritz and Will Greenwood from Bikes to You, and Chad Bishop from Harper's. We put enough distance between us and the chase group to stay away. We worked so hard to form the break, I could only stay with them for about 3 miles before I dropped off on a hill. Crap!

I dropped back to the chase group with Pete basso and Kris kunze on the front of the train motoring - they were chasing hard as they did not know I was in the break. So I hopped in with them and we drilled it getting close to the lead group.

Were 8 guys in the chase group, most of which had somebody in the break, and did not take a turn on the front....so Pete, Kris and I did all of the work into the 25 mph head wind on the 3rd lap trying to pull back the lead group.

It fried Kris and myself working so hard with the wind, so we peeled off as they sped up at the start of the last lap. Kris and I checked to see if we could see any of the 3 "B's" (Blood, Bone, or Bile) and we could not so we finished the race and rode the last lap by ourselves. Pete stayed with the chase group and went on to win the field sprint (imagine that) for 8th. Will Greenwood from Bikes to You took the win.

It was a great race, Pete, Kris and I did not get the result we wanted, but better off for us to try to pull the lead group back on the 3rd lap versus just sit in...as we got in a heck of a workout with the wind. Great job Pete! Check out the big boys race update on Lou's Blog.

We would like to welcome Ben Garrett to the Rasmussen Race Team.

Ben will focus this year on triathalons along with some road racing. Ben knows running (3:08 Phoenix Marathon). Ben knows his way around the dirt as well. With Ben's 2007 performance in the Leadville 100 Mtn Bike Race in Colorado, he holds the course record for the fastest Iowan in the history of the race. Leadville is the highest city in the United States at an altitude of 10,200'. This 100 mile mtn bike "race acrss the sky" reaches a highest point of 12,600'. Out of 850 racers, Ben placed 63rd, with a time of 8:34 (only 61 places behind Floyd Landis).

Ben Garrett and Jason Alread (another top Iowa Leadville finisher) prior to the start of 2007 Race.

We wish Kelli Mente a speedy recovery after a pretty nasty crash last night at the Tuesday Night World Championships, as we were heading North of Ankeny. Since it was the first nice day, the group was huge and Kelli got caught in a group pile up and was taken to Methodist Hospital. Heal up Kelli and I am sure you will be kicking Jane's butt again very soon! Here is Kelli's email address if you wish to send her a note: kellimente@gmail.com

Cat 3 Podium:
2nd - Brent Mitchell
1st - Chad Bishop
3rd - Steve Robinson

Death Squad Represenatives:
Nathan Bartels, Brent Mitchell, Lou Waugaman, and Pete Basso . I think Nate likes me. Emily - it was like this the whole way home from the race too!

At the start of the race, it was sunshine and 38 degrees with 20 mph winds.

Results:
1) Chad Bishop (Melon City)
2) Brent Mitchell (Rasmussen Death Squad 5,000)
3) Steve Robinson (All9Yards)
4) Dominic Moraniec (Atlas)
5) Scott Robinson (All9Yards)
6) Matt Gumm (All9Yards)
7) Pete Basso (Rasmussen Death Squad 5,000)
DNF Chris Reed (HBA)
DNF Ian Robinson (HBA)
DNF Bryan Moritz (Bikes 2 You)
DNF Will Green Wood (Bikes 2 you)

Bikes 2 You was represented by Bryan Moritz and Will Greenwood. Melon City had three guys, including Chad Bishop, who recently upgraded, making this his first race as a Cat 3. The Rasmussen Death Squad was represented by Pete Basso and myself. Representing A9Y’s was The Robinson Bros and Matt Gumm. They were delayed to the race a little when Gumm’s bike became detached from his roof rack, flipped over and shattered the back window of Scott’s car. I am sure they thought it was the Rasmussen Death Squad shooting at them. Gumm ended up riding Steve’s wife’s bike for the race. He raced one of his better races this week, so maybe Gummi will bring Steve’s wife’s bike the Tuesday Night World Championships??

On lap one of the ten lap, (50 mile race), Will Greenwood (Bikes2you) took a daring attempt (into the high winds) and goes on a solo break. It stuck for over a lap but was eventually reeled back in.

After Will came back to the group, there were a couple more attempts to roll off the front. Scott Robinson takes a solo break as well, however they all proved to be futile. Each one came back Scott was riding very strong today and held the break for over a lap and a half before coming back to the group.

After controlling the front of the peloton most of the race, Basso faded off the back only to spend a half lap chasing back on. With two laps to go cramps had set in pretty hard causing him fall off the peloton for a final time. Matt Gumm (A9Y) and Chad Bishop (Melon City) went off the front. With those two off the front, and Basso off the back, there was little cooperation from the others to chase this break down since there were only two of us (Dominic and myself) that did not have a teammate in the break. So Chad and Matt, were able to put some distance on the field. Gummi began to show signs of fatigue and faded back to the peloton, Chad stayed strong off the front remaining solo in the break.

With Chad off the front, we were not going to be able to catch him. So it was clearly coming down to a field sprint for 2nd place. On the last 1/3 of the last lap there was some cat and mouse going on to get positioned for the sprint. Nobody wanted to stick their nose out in the wind for the sprint too early. In the last ½ mile, Scott Robinson went to the front. With a little less than 200 yards to go, Dominic comes around Scott for the sprint followed by Steve Robinson, and myself. Steve came around Dominic and with about 50 yards to go, and I was able to come around Steve and clip him at the line by about a foot to take the field sprint for 2nd place.

Hats off to Chad Bishop for being able to stay off the front, and also to Scott Robinson for riding a very strong race. Great racing with Steve Robinson and Matt Gumm.

Also congrats to:

1) Lou Waugaman for a clear win in the field sprint in the Pro 1!2 to take 4th Place.
2) In other Rassy Team news, Reed Rinderknect and Loren Storts were participating in the Iron Man in Tempe on Sunday. With top ten finishes these two could qualify for a spot in the Kona Ironman this fall.
3) PRC Girls - Kellie Mente and Jane Riessen ventured over to Lincoln to participate in their racing this weekend. The woman’s racing was fierce with a couple of Cat 1 racers showing up from out of state. They were not strong enough to break to the deadly combination of the PRC team. On Day 1 Kellie and Jane take 1st and 2nd respectively. This is Kellie's first win in the open category. Nicely done! Day 2: Jane Riessen out lasted the peloton for a 1st place finish with Kelli Mente driving home a 3rd place finish. Great job ladies, keep up the incredible work.

Hats off to All9Yards.com for putting on a great race weekend with super turnouts. For updates on the Cat 1/2 Pro race click HERE to hear about results of local racers like Lou Waugaman and Jared Osterloh. It was great to see all of the new black kits from Rasmussen's race teams. Click here for an update on the women's PRC team.

The Cat 3 group was pretty small (16 Racers) compared to more than double in the 1/2 Pro.

Bikes to you was well represented with Will Greenwood, Bryan "don't ask me what i do in my spare time" Moritz and Fin. They were missing their sandbag leader Chis Hansen who usually starts showing his form when the weather warms up. All9 had Steve and Scott Robinson along with Matt Gumm. The Birchwood team from Minneapoils had 3 or 4 guys in the race. Pig was the only Rassy guy as Basso was in MN for work and Kunze was sitting at home with his wife and newborn son.

The race was 67.5 miles (5 laps of ~ 13 miles each), on a hilly windy course in Alttona. After 2 laps the field was cut down to 10. 3 guys rolled off the front, including Adam Price and the group decided to let them sit out in the wind for a while by themselves. There were a few other attacks, but none would stick as they were all caught. On lap 3 and 4 the group worked in rotation to pull the leaders back. 1 of the leaders from Nebraska dropped back to the group so there were 8 of us chasing the 2 leaders.

Just prior to the start of the last lap, I started cramping in my calf pretty bad and pulled back from the group. Shortly after, the same thing happened to Steve Robinson. We rode in together the last part of lap 4 to race another day.

The chase group splintered and were able to catch the 2 leaders.
Final results: 1st place - Will Greenwood (Bikes to you), followed by couple of guys from Nebraska, with 4th place going to Bryan Moritz (bikes to you).

Congrats to Steve Robinson for riding a very aggressive race and going on to get second the next day at the Big Creek Road Race.

Next Sunday: the Finchford Roubaix.

A little chilly tonight (41 degrees when we rolled back to Bike World) but it did not stop a great turnout of about 30 riders.

Cam, Lippold (after one "incident" with a car already), JJ in flaming red and Sean Noonan roll out of town.
Basso finally joined us, and happily rides along side his friend Tony Nichols, before things picked up. Hey look, part way back, it's Lou "McLovin" Waugaman.

Lou Waugaman, Dusty Mars, Rick Noyes, Kris Kunze, Tony Muse and I just returned from our 5 day spring training trip to Tucson.

One of the rides was the 7,000+ foot ascent on Mt. Lemmon. It was a 25 mile climb at 6% grade. Dusty and I somehow got into a 2 man break on the way to the mountian (ok, it might of had something to do with we were tired of waiting for the Tri-guys that were late on the way down that morning from Phoenix) and we were part way up the climb before Lou caught me on mile 5 and Dustin on mile 8.

Tony Nichols and JJ Bailey were the next 2 to catch us, followed by Kris Kunze, followed by the group of Reed, Ben Garrett, Tony Muse and a few others.

Dustin, myself and Rick Noyes reached the top about the same time. Everyone with the group made it to the top. It was only 40 degrees at the top with still quite a bit of snow remaining. On the descent, it was cold and some guys put some plastic inside their jersey to stay warm. this is why Noyes looks like the michelin man in a couple of the pictures.

There were a lot of F-15's, A-10 warthogs flying from the local air base. Here is a shot of a couple of P-51's from WWII flying along side of the newest fighter jet F22 raptor.

dang that is a big team

While Lou sits in the confort of the gym doing spin class and sipping his gatorade, a few of us (Pete Basso, Richard Noyes, Lang Wightman, Troy Beck, Steve Fuller and I) did some snow gravel. This is a shot East of Booneville. I am usually off the front , but for this photo I purposely drifted to the back to get a good shot (hee hee). Either that or they wouldn't wait for me, one or the other. Pete says this Beck is a cat5. I think they read the number upside down "2"

Here is a Christmas message for you. www.muchisexpected.blogspot.com

I have been looking for a new bike light. I came across this page that compared the different lights. Click on the link below. If you go to the bottom where they have the different lights listed next to the picture, you can "roll over" the words for "high" and "low" and they show you what the high and low beams look like for these lights on the trail. (it takes a couple seconds for it to work) Kind of neat. http://www.bikemag.com/gear/accessories/LED_Light_Test_1/index.html

Pete finally wins a race (Ok Jane and Pete took 1st and 2nd)
The boys chillin' in the playground.

Here is the race recap borrowed from Pete Basso's blog:

Hammer Hummer:
Brent, "That's Jared" and I all rode over to Davenport this morning. Looked like the weather was going to be sketchy but turned out very nice for the race today. We had the first race of the day at 10:00 on a course that boasts a "T" shaped course with three 180 degree turns...saaawheeet!! My kinda course. Lots of familiar faces there; (Matt Brakeville), Carl Buchanan, (Cannandale), and some new guys who just upgraded from the 5's, (Carson Christen).
First lap started out slow then picked up with a few attacks off the front. The first four attacks I decided to bring back on my own, then I let the next two off the front. However, when I see Bryan Moritz go I know it's time to follow. With 17 laps to go Bryan and Ron Bridal from Team Mack went and I had to chase them down for over 1/2 a lap to catch on. When I caught on I went straight into the rotation with no rest. Man I wasn't feeling that great, plus I kept looking back to see if we were making any headway on the peloton. It didn't seem like we were so I thought I'd pull up and let them catch us. Bryan yelled encouraging words at me to stay with them. I jumped back on my pedals and started to ride in the break for a couple of laps. I just couldn't seem to recovery quick enough to help their get-a-way. I was struggling to stay on. Even with their encouragement I decided to drop off and go back to the peloton, (that later turned out to be a bad move since the break stuck and they finished 1 - 2).
As I retreated back to the peloton I could see that my decision was not smart. The peloton had very little cooperation and only a few guys working. Todd Gillihan, (Team Skin), and Chris Hansen , (Team 14), were working hard as was Jared Osterlou, (A9Y). Brent, Jared and I would stay up front the rest of the race and control the chase group most of the time. Finally getting to the last couple of laps to go and we saw some jersey's we hadn't see all day, (figures?) I had decided early on that I would go into the second to last turn in 2nd place then sprint for the pack win. I was positioned absolutely perfectly going into the final turn I just needed the guy in first to go a little wide on the turn. Sometimes things just go as planned as I was able to out manuever him on the inside and begin my sprint before him. There was an attempt to foil my plans as a guy from Melon City Cycles tried to cut me off inside on the turn. Fortunately he could see that I wasn't going to give him and inch and he had to slam the brakes on at the last second. It was a slight downhill sprint that was pretty long so I had to really push it hard. I was able to win the sprint and take 3rd overall. Not too bad considering I dropped off the break giving up a guaranteed top 3 finish, however, had I stayed on the break I would've conceded first and second to them since they created the break and were working hard to keep it going. Jared followed closely to my wheel and ended up 3rd on the sprint with Brent directly behind him for 4th. There was one very memorable moment of this race, it happened towards the end of the race. As we were hitting some lap traffic I looked up and saw a guy wearing a jersey that was a mid-drift; he was showing off 1/2 his crack with a nasty rug of hair chasing up his racing stripe. I was wondering if he had is belly pierced too? It was pretty funny.
Congrats to Bryan and Ron for making the break stick. Bryan has been riding strong all year and I knew once he got off the front it would stay. Sounds like Bryan clipped a peddle on the last turn before the sprint which allowed Ron to win. Still it was a great effort by both of these guys. Congrats to both of you for an excellent job in the race.
All in all, A9Y ended up with a 3, 5 and 6th in the race. Great job to Brent and JAred for riding so well and helping to control the race. Jared sat on the front of the race for over 10 laps, now thats strong.

The Cat 4 Race: 4 laps of 9 miles with one hill and a strong South wind.

Team all 9 had Pete Basso, Steve and Scott Robinson, and Tad from IA City and me.

The Robinson Bros (as they do so well) did a great job continually attacking the field early to try to wear down the Mercy team from IA city. (John Eppen and Adam Price). There was a early flier by Pete Basso and John Eppen, and then they came back. The 2 guys from North Iowa Spin (Evan and Tim) were off the front on the 2nd lap, and the group organized and pulled them back.

At 2.5 laps in, we hit the hill for the 3rd time. There was a break of 8 that got away (with Pete and myslelf in this break). Everyone worked hard together to create a big gap on the rest of the field. With one lap to go, Pete peeled off, so there were 7 of us in the break on the last lap and continued to work hard together. We hit the hill again with half a lap to go. Eppen, Price, Thad Neil, and Luis got away. Evan, Andrew chased hard and kept them in sight. Even sprinted ahead at the line and got 5th, and I took 6th. Andrew Fagersten got 7th and had put in a lot of work during the race.

The Crit went off real fast right from the start. Pete Basso (All9Yards racing) likes the fast starts, and positioned himself well right from the gun. Me, not so much. Pete rode a strong race. In the last corner, his back tire blew out, and he sprinted the last city block on a flat tire to take 3rd place! Super job Pete. Adam Price took 2nd place. Adam and Pete will now have a sizable lead in Iowa Cup points with me still maybe in 3rd spot. Jason (All9yards) from Mankato took the win today. We have a Jason on our team???? Pete meet Jason. Jason, meet Pete.
Pete Basso on the downhill.

Cat 4 Race: Hey this criterium thing is different than a road race. Everybody seems like they are in a hurry. It was a very fast pace for the whole race of 16 miles. Adam Price takes the win, and I took 4th. Robinson Bros were there with Scott taking a flyer with 2 laps to go.

This should put the Iowa Cup Series points for Cat 4 at: Adam Price (20), Pete Basso (20), Brent Mitchell (17)

Lane Anderson and Lee take the 1, 2 for All9 in the big boys race. Kim West takes 4th spot after getting up at 4:30 am to drive to Dubuque for the 50+ race at 9:00 am and then racing again in the 1,2 Race at 3:30 pm. The early bird gets the worm! Great race Kim! I take the win!! With Pete Basso in 7th. Robinson Bros raced hard with attacks off the front. Pete had a little difficulty today, he brought the wrong shoes. So Donny used duct tape to tape Pete and his mtn bike shoes to his road pedals. Go to www.cyclingupdate.com for full results.

Pete Basso got 2nd to Kurt Long. Ben Garrett, Reed, Jared, and Steve Robinson all raced strong. I was off theback with Fish and Scott Robinson. We will race another day.

Since our team is so big this year....Lane Anderson decided that we needed to have a draft so we can break down our 33 racers for the Water Works Omnium series of 5 races, to make it more competitive. This format should make everyone stronger for the other races throughout the year. It should be a good ride.

The team captains for the draft (Mable, Pig, Scott Robinson) were selected because they all 3 know how to ride a bike.

Here are the teams.

1) Team Captain:
Dave Mable: Team Name: "Is WWP different than Trans-Iowa?"

Good news is each member will get one of these before each race! NO! Not from Dee.
Team Bus
1)
Chad Vandelune
2) Ross - maybe they will get his name right this year - Schuchart
3) Scott Fairbairn
4) Kurt Hantleman is built like one of these
5)
Jim Logan
6)
Ben Garrett
7) Reed won't even try the last name
8)
Dave Fish
9) Brian Benson
10) Lee V
11)
Dave Mable

2) Team Captain: Scott Robinson Team Name: "Pull Through"

Team Bus
1) Lane - Puerto Rico - Anderson
2)
Kim - what happened to the cage matches? - West
3) Dave - How did I get so tan? - Lippold
4) John Newell
5)
Steve - My brother picked me 5th? - Robinson - It's a long story when they were kids when Scott missed a whole day at the Wisconsin Dells because little brother landed on one of these when Dad threw on the brakes.
6) Matt -
wrong way - Gumm
7)
Jaons Alread
8) Steve B
9) Rich - Only Steers and Queers come from Oklahoma - Wooten
10) Charlie
11) Scott Robinson

3) Team Captain: Pig Team Name: "Pig's 11"

Team Bus
1)
Lou - I have a new car this year, so I won't be late to the start line - Waugamann
2) Donny - Oh crap, I knew I should have wasted all of that training time setting up my blog so people could play space invaders - Quixote

3) Pete Basso
4) Dave C
5) Jim Robidoux
6) Ryan Elsbernd
7) Pete Jensen
8) Paul Jensen (we're not brothers)
9)
Marc Hollander
10) Ralph Henderson
11) Brent - Pig - Mitchell

I really had no idea how to take a picture of my bike so I went to Pete's site and I found out the appropriate way is to have the garage door closed and lean the back tire up against the door.
With these big wheels, I will need to carry a stick to scrape off people like Mable that may get caught in the waffle iron tread on my tires.

Ullrich gives DNA sample
2/1/2007
Jan Ullrich followed through on his promise to deliver a saliva sample for a DNA comparison to blood taken custody in the Operación Puerto investigation. His attorneys announced earlier this week that he was willing to travel to Germany to give a DNA sample, which was actually taken in Konstanz, Switzerland, on the German border.
The sample will be turned over to prosecutors in Bonn, Germany, who must now await arrival of the blood bags from Spain, before the comparison test can be made.

I wonder what THIS GUY thinks? Or THIS GUY, or THIS GUY, or THIS GUY, or THIS GUY? Speaking of that guy....Oh, crap, Pete got out of his pen! But I think that Jan would prefer to be giving his DNA to somebody else.

No animals were hurt in this posting, and a couple of the pictures were borrowed from this site.

Mable's son, Noah created drawing 1: Leadville 100 -"the race across the sky"
Then just like their dads, who are always battling head to head...Pig's 8 month old son, Quinn picked it up and thought that there was a little too much "blank space" at the bottom of the picture! (you will have to click on the picture to read the print)

Thanks to my Dad for taking this great video! He drug his ass 1,200 miles across country, got up before dawn and did an outstanding job of filming.

Thanks to my wife, Cindy for taking this great video clip. You can hear my son, Quinn crying while we were climbing "powerLine."

Sally and her Pimp
Ben Garrett: My Duathalon? Beer and basketball.

Chad cheers his buddy Jim on to victory.
We have told Jim that the HOLE SHOT is the key!
JJ, Eppen, Nichols
2 seconds later, Steve tripped and bit off his tounge.
A mountain man, a priest in a sling and a long-haired photographer with pink sun glasses, walk into a bar.............
Nathan Bartels is sure he will not be standing by the keg this time when JJ needs a hand up....... We are not sure if Nathan was booted from the team???
Speed kills.
Smoking kills.
